What can my child see on YouTube Kids?
Unlike other apps you have a lot of control over what you child does/doesn’t see. For starters you can disable the search function. This is simply done by tapping the lock icon in the bottom right hand corner. Once this is tapped you will be asked to complete a multiplication sum to get access to the settings.
For older children you can set your own passcode instead of a sum. Once you complete the sum correctly or enter the correct password a small four icon menu will appear. The first icon is a ‘Sign In’ option. Using this you will have access to more parental controls. This step is not necessary for the basic parental controls. The second icon is a timer lock, using this you can set a timer on the app. When the time expires the app will lock and can only be unlocked by a parent/guardian. The max. Is 60 mins and the min. is 1 min. The third icon is settings. Through the settings icon you can review your content settings.
There are three ranges to choose your content from, preschool (ages 4 and under), younger (ages 5 - 7) and older (ages 8 - 12). You can also toggle the search function to on or off. Turning search off will limit users to a more limited set of videos. With search off, your child can’t search for videos, and your child is limited to videos from a set of channels that have been verified by YouTube Kids. With search on, your child can search for new videos that interest them from the millions available in the YouTube Kids app. In settings you also have the option of turning audio and sound effects on or off.
