The two main risks with the YouTube website and app relate to the interaction with others that takes place in the comments section and the video content they will view.
As with all social media platforms, children may be communicating with people they don’t know offline and these people could be dangerous. Children need to fully understand the need to never share any personal or private information with others online.
In terms of video content, children might view, there is a risk that they will come across inappropriate, offensive or frightening videos. Adverts they see may also be inappropriate.
A third risk that needs consideration is the amount of time many children are spending on YouTube or similar platforms. Many studies have focused on the negative impact of children spending a lot of time staring at screens, particularly in a passive, rather than active, capacity.
